Houston Mayor Bill White has finally loosened his choke hold on The Center Serving Persons with Mental Retardation. Rather than kick them into the street so that his developer friends could grab the property, he’s decided instead to shake them down for “only” $6 million dollars. And the Chronicle considers that to be a win/win.

The residents are not the only beneficiaries of the deal, which appears to be a winning proposition all the way around.

Winning proposition all the way around? Right. Let’s do the math. The center has to divert $6 million dollars from providing much needed care. The city gets $6 million dollars so that Bill White can purchase more commemorative plaques to give to such deserving people as ...
